The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur was established in 1958 as Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI), when environmental concerns were limited to human health with a focus on water supply/sewage disposal/ communicable diseases and to some extent on industrial pollution and occupational diseases. The chemical and biological solutions to address these problems were simple, though challenging. However, slowly worldwide public awareness on the contamination of environment on regional to global scale started getting attention in 1970’s. Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, rechristened the Institute as National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), in the year 1974. NEERI, is a pioneer laboratory in the field of environmental science and engineering and is a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. CSIR-NEERI, is devoted to research and innovations in environmental science and engineering besides solving a range of problems posed by industry, government and public. CSIR-NEERI, has five zonal laboratories at Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.
Currently, the Institute, in-line with the vision, mission and policy of CSIR, delineated thrust areas for R&D comprising of Air Pollution Monitoring and Control, Water Technology and Management, Climate Change, Cleaner Technology and Modelling, Energy and Resource Management, Environmental Biotechnology and Genomics, Environmental Virology, Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment, Environmental Heath, Environmental Materials, Solid & Hazardous Waste Management, Wastewater Treatment Technology. CSIR-NEERI, has always been a front-runner in developing cost-effective and need based and bio-inspired technological innovations suitable to socio-economic conditions prevailing in the country in a sustainable, inclusive and people centred manner. NEERI, significantly contributes to policy making, environmental regulations, and implementation through active participation in various National and State level expert committees constituted by Ministries and Regulatory agencies.
